First Encounter

The First Encounter is an approach to the text with either an activity or experience that primes the cast/crew for the show they are about to begin. Our First Encounter was an escape room board game called “Escape Room in a Box: Flashback” and featured a three-tiered approach to the game. Centered around a werewolf attack, the goal of the game was to create a magic amulet that would save everyone from said attack. The cast and crew were broken into three groups, blue, red, and purple, and were collectively given thirty minutes to solve their puzzles. Each puzzle had a combination lock that housed one part of the amulet. There was also a final puzzle that could only be solved if all three of the colored paths were solved first. Over the course of the thirty minutes, each group used teamwork and problem solving to attempt to solve their puzzle combination lock. Unfortunately for our group, only the red team solved their puzzle, thus “losing” the game and failing to prevent the werewolf attack. The objective of the night was to allow the cast and crew to place themselves in Detective Cioffi’s shoes, allowing themselves to feel like a real private investigator. Our First Encounter was an absolute success and was a positive first look at the world of Curtains for our cast and crew involved.

Audience Engagement

Our lobby display will feature a 1950s-themed photo booth to celebrate the opening night of Robbin' Hood, the show-within-a-show in Curtains. Hollywood and Broadway themed props along with fake Clue-inspired weapons will be available to pose with to truly embody the spirit of the show. Feel free to take as many photos as you'd like before and after the show, or even during intermission. If you upload them to your socials, be sure to tag Villanova Theatre and get the word out for our show, too! Just be sure not to spoil the ending of our murder mystery musical.
